Memories from My First Days at School

My first day at Primary School, and my first day at High School. I was a very shy child, I sustained an injury on my hand and leg when I was very young which made me highly conscious of showing them. I always wore long sleeves and long socks. The black and white photo is in my grandparents back garden where I spent many many years, nurturing the garden… Now retired myself these photos give me great joy, showing my grandchildren who cannot believe I was a little girl once!

📸 Some of Our Favourite School Memories

From first days to favourite school friends, we’ve loved seeing the memories shared throughout the competition. Here are a few of our favourites!

Looking Up to My Big Sister - Submitted by Nichola Miller

Looking Up to My Big Sister – Submitted by Nichola Miller

Me and my big sister at school back in the 80’s in what was once called Swaziland in Southern Africa (now Eswatini). I just love this photo as you can see how much I adore her in my face, looking up at her and wanting to be just like her!

A Sports Day to Remember – Submitted by Nyck Moore

Taken by my dad after a successful sports day, at my desk in the 4th form. It was a proper old fashioned desk with an integrated fold-down wooden seat and my favourite in my entire school life. It must have been at least 60 years old at that time. Hopefully it still exists somewhere and is cherished.

From Classmates to Soulmates- Submitted by Diane Radford

Me and my now hubby at primary school. We didn’t get on at that age. But many many years later we bumped into each other as our parents still lived a few roads from each other. And the rest is history.

30 Years On, Still Celebrating Together - Submitted by Krisztina Jo

30 Years On, Still Celebrating Together – Submitted by Krisztina Jo

30 years ago finished my high school in Hungary.

This weekend we’re celebrating this 30 years anniversary and celebrating each other’s as well.

A Full Circle School Memory - Submitted by Ruth Black

A Full Circle School Memory – Submitted by Ruth Black

This was myself in 1990 for my first nursery picture. I was about 4 years old here. I remember that my mum had to come with me every day and stay with me as my anxiety was so bad, that when i eventually went to primary school, I balled my eyes out as she left me with my teacher. But from then on I went into school no problem. That was at Mossgiel Primary school in Dundee, it’s no longer there now, it was torn down and houses have been built. Another funny story from school time, is my primary 4 teacher, it was her first year teaching, and now 30 years later she is also teaching my daughter this up coming year. A full circle moment ☺️

Smallest in the Choir, Biggest Memories - Submitted by Lisa Worthington

Smallest in the Choir, Biggest Memories – Submitted by Lisa Worthington

I was in the choir from my junior years at primary school this was on one of summer Fairs. I was always one of the smallest in the group and the choir teacher was my favourite teacher and I have so many memories that include the choir or performing in the Christmas shows.

A Precious Photograph of Dad's First Day at School - Submitted by Sarah Rayner

A Precious Photograph of Dad’s First Day at School – Submitted by Sarah Rayner

My dad on his first day of school in 1948, proudly dressed in his school uniform. This is the only photograph I have of him as a child, which makes it incredibly precious to me, especially now that he is no longer with us.

One small photograph has preserved a moment from his childhood that I would otherwise never have known, and it is a reminder of just how important it is to print and keep our memories safe.

My First Day at School – Ham, Coleslaw and Memories - Submitted by Katie Mccartney

My First Day at School – Ham, Coleslaw and Memories – Submitted by Katie Mccartney

Sitting at my little school desk, I remember feeling so small and just wanting to go home. Then came lunchtime — my little pink lunchbox, my pink cup and that unmistakable smell of a ham and coleslaw sandwich. I sat there trying not to cry, missing home and wishing the school day would hurry up. Funny how, years later, the smell of ham and coleslaw can still take me straight back to that little girl, sitting there and just wanting her mum. ❤️

Our Class Nearly 40 Years Ago and Bubble Stickers - Submitted by Vanessa Smith

Our Class Nearly 40 Years Ago and Bubble Stickers – Submitted by Vanessa Smith

Who remembers when we used to add little cartoon bubble stickers to our photos with funny little comments?

I can’t remember what was so interesting that we were all looking at in the photo but I can remember the full names of each person in my class nearly 40 years later!

Want to see more?

We’ve shared even more of your wonderful school memories in our Facebook photo album.
