Key rotation. The user inserts the key and rotates it; the cylinder’s plug turns with the key. Typical rotation angles are 90° or 180° depending on cam geometry and lock specification.

- Cam / follower action. The cylinder plug carries a cam (flat plate) or a hex/rectangular follower on its tail. As the cam rotates, it either:

- directly pushes/pulls the top of the vertical locking bar via a fixed connection (slot/slot-and-pin), or

- rotates a short lever which converts rotary to linear motion acting on the rod.

- Vertical translation of locking bar. The cam-to-rod interface constrains the rod to translate vertically. The rod is guided by brackets so rotation of the cam produces near-pure vertical displacement (small lateral component eliminated by guides).

- Engagement with drawer latches. Each drawer has a latch or a notch. When the rod moves to the locked position its projections (or a transverse locking lug welded to the rod at the level of each drawer) occupy the drawer notch/strike, preventing the drawer front from moving outwards. When the rod is moved to the unlocked position, those projections clear the notches and drawers are free to open.

- Interlocks / anti-tilt (if present). In many designs the rod movement also moves the anti-tilt pawl into a position that allows only the topmost drawer to be opened, or disables anti-tilt entirely when unlocked.
