There are three main ways that HP will attempt to block you using own brand cartridges rather than their own. The first is by sending firmware updates to the printer that mean the old version on a cartridge is now no longer compatible and therefore the cartridge can't communicate with the printer. I would recommend that you block the automated updates being sent to your printer to allow you to continue to use non branded cartridges, please go to https://www.cartridgepeople.com/info/hp-firmware-update for details.

Also, they have a scheme called HP Plus (HP+) whereby certain benefits like an extended warranty may be offered, but signing up to this will require your printer to use original HP products for the lifetime of the printer. To check whether your printer is enrolled in the HP Plus scheme:

Go to - Printer Settings → Printer Information

If it shows any of the following HP Plus is active and you therefore cannot use own-brand ink.

“HP+ Printer”
“HP+ Activated”
“Requires Original HP ink”
Cloud-managed / security features enabled

If you have not signed up to HP Pluse, you should still be able to use own brand cartridges.

Finally there is Instant Ink, whereby HP monitor your usage and send out ink when you're getting low. For our cartridges to work in any HP printer any Instant Ink subscription must be cancelled and you should seek confirmation from HP that this is the case prior to buying our cartridges.
